PRS Kicks Off 50th Anniversary Festivities!

Thursday, October 4, 2012

PRS' 50th Anniversary festivities began with a 53 person strong "50 Years of HOPE" Walking Team at the September 22, 2012 National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) NAMI Walk. PRS' participation in this event was tremendously meaningful for so many of our supporters, as PRS started as a "social club" for those living with mental illness. Many of our early friends and supporters know very well the challenges faced by those who live with mental illness. We are pleased to partner with NAMI to present PRS’ skills training and support services as viable treatment options that successfully complement the more well-known options of therapy and medication regimes. Because PRS’ treatment modalities have proved so successful in enabling life-changing transformations of individuals living with mental illness, and because PRS’ treatment options have made similarly positive impacts on individuals living with certain other brain disorders, PRS has now expanded the populations that we serve to include persons living with substance use disorders, mild intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum disorder or any combination of these, in addition to individuals living with mental illness.

PRS Establishes HOPE Fund

Monday, November 15, 2010

PRS provides skills training and supports to people with serious mental illness in Northern Virginia. Recently, PRS established the HOPE Fund to provide Home-based Services to people with serious and pervasive mental illness who do not qualify for Medicaid – the primary funding source for these services. Individuals and families in desperate need of services often contact PRS, but if they do not qualify for Medicaid and can’t afford to pay for services directly, PRS is unable to serve them. These individuals are left to manage on their own without the rehabilitation services that would help them maintain their housing, improve their self-sufficiency, work toward employment, volunteering or education goals, or find hope for building new and more robust lives. The development and availability of the HOPE Fund to support Home-based Services for people in this desperate situation will have an enormous impact on their lives, on the lives of their families and on our local community.
